Architect Mitch Miller of Village Architects AIA designed this distinctive contemporary home with a unique vision in mind–to reflect the owner’s vibrant personality while taking full advantage of the lot’s unique shape and panoramic views. The house needed to be fresh and modern with an open floor plan that invites in natural light and frames the riverfront views.
The lot presented several challenges and opportunities for the design team. Miller explains, “The lot was very constrained by its shape, size and orientation. We had to deal with issues such as privacy, noise, and flooding. On the other hand, the lot also had amazing potential for views, natural light and connection to the water.”
Betsy Isackson, Senior Interior Designer at Decorator’s Unlimited, worked closely with the owners to create an interior that matched their lifestyle and preferences. They wanted their home to be timeless, elegant, and made for comfortable living,” said Isackson. Isackson used a mix of materials, textures, and finishes to create a warm and inviting interior. The furniture is mostly modern and minimalist, with some vintage pieces that add personality and history. The artwork is colorful and eclectic, reflecting the clients’ tastes and travels.
Isackson also paid attention to the details and accessories that make a home feel cozy and personal. “We added some elements of surprise and fun, such as a pool table in the bar, a ping pong table with family photos and trophies, and an outdoor loveseat swing on the balcony. We also used plants, rugs, cushions, lamps and books to add layers of texture, color and warmth.” The result is a contemporary riverfront home that responds to its site, its context and its owners. The home is designed to capture the views, the light and the breeze. The home is also designed to accommodate the needs, the desires and the style of its occupants. It is a balance of form and function, of beauty and comfort, of simplicity and sophistication.
